Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a silent disease that affects over 10 million people in the U.S. Osteoporosis occurs when your body loses bone too fast or when your body does not build bone fast enough. Many do not realize they have osteoporosis until they fall or break a bone, also known as a fracture. In fact, studies of both genders age 50 and older demonstrate that one in two women and one in four men will fracture a bone due to osteoporosis.

Are you concerned? If so, you may be at risk based on the following criteria:

  • Aging
  • Being female
  • If your mother and/or father had osteoporosis
  • If your are petite and have a small body frame
  • If your are postmenopausal

What should you do if you are at risk?

  • Take a Calcium supplement

    • Age < 50: 1,000mg daily
    • Age 50 and >: 1, 200 mg daily
  • Take a Vitamin D supplement

    • Age < 50: 400-800 IU daily
    • Age 50 and >: 800-1,000 IU daily
