Conditions Treated

The following categories are the primary conditions that Dr. Dahir treats.

Female Sexual Health

Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) is defined as disorders that cause personal distress in relation to sexual desire, arousal, orgasm, and pain. Contrary to beliefs, FSD is a highly prevalent condition that affects nearly 50 million American women.

Vulvodynia is a chronic type of pain that affects the vulvar/vaginal area and the condition is classified according to the site of pain (localized or generalized).  Vulvar pain experts believe the prevalence rates are under-reported because many women are misdiagnosed due to a lack of education among health care providers.

Pelvic Pain

There are several conditions that can contribute to pelvic pain. Chronic pelvic pain often causes the pelvic muscles to contract and become tight due to a lack of blood flow. As a result, the pelvic muscles spasm and cause pain. Vaginismus can also occur, which is described as an involuntary spasm of the pelvic floor muscles.

Testosterone for Women

Despite beliefs that testosterone is a “male hormone” only, this is actually a false statement. Testosterone is naturally produced by the adrenal glands and ovaries. Testosterone levels decline with the use of certain medications, aging, menopause, and surgical removal of the ovaries.

Testosterone for Men

A decline in testosterone levels can result in fatigue and cause changes in mood and sexual functioning. Current research suggests that testosterone replacement has several health benefits, including cardioprotective effects on the heart.

Vulvovaginal Conditions

It can be frustrating if you suffer from recurrent yeast or bacterial vaginal infections, especially if conventional treatments are not effective. You may need an alternative treatment to break the vicious cycle. Also, recurrent infections may result in other irritative symptoms such as itching and pain.

  • Chronic vaginal itching
  • Chronic vaginal pain

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

It can be confusing if you are trying to choose hormone therapy that is best for you. There are several opinions about “bioidentical” versus “synthetic” hormones. Your healthcare provider needs to discuss the risks and benefits of treatment options.

  • Bioidentical HRT
    • Commercially available at your local pharmacy or compounded by a specialty pharmacy
  • Testosterone replacement for men and women
    • Transdermal, subcutaneous, implantable

Wellness Exams and Screenings

Don’t forget to have a yearly wellness exam to include a thorough exam and basic labs! It is important to know that the Pap screening guidelines have changed and you may not require a Pap every year. However, it is important to have a pelvic and breast exam every year.

  • Pap smears
  • Breast exams
  • Routine blood work
  • Screening for sexually transmitted infections
